Former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers will be appointed head of the UNHCR
The Dutch government expressed their pride of the nomination of a national in such a high UN position. At the same time Prime Minister Kok was disappointed that his prefered candidate, environmental Minister Jan Pronk, was not the man to get the post.
In Dutch governmental circles it is felt as a "affront" to the reputations of the Prime Minister and of "eternal" Minister by proffesion, Jan Pronk.
After his fall as the longest standing Prime Minister, Ruud Lubbers has taught "Globalization" at the University of Nijmegen, Chaired an important advisory commission to the government on international affairs and recently was appointed Chairman of the WWF.
